How to apply

Requirements for application

Applicants should hold an M.D., MD/MSc, or M.D./Ph.D. degrees and be in good standing in the medical community.  By the time of enrollment in our fellowship program, applicants should have completed an accredited internship and in general two additional years of internal medicine residency training, and should have a California license to practice Medicine.

Application procedure

We participate in the National Resident Match Program for  GI fellowship. The application deadline for our program is January 15, 2008, and the tentative interview period is February to April, 2008.   All applicants are required to complete the application through ERAS AND the supplemental application form:

  • MyERAS 2008 Application Worksheet (PDF, 15 pages)
  • 3 to 4 Letters of Recommendation
  • Personal Statement
  • Medical School Transcript
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation /Dean's Letter
  • Wallet Size Color Photograph
  • USMLE Transcript (Transmitted by the NBME)
  • Completed supplemental form

IMPORTANT: AN APPLICATION WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED COMPLETE UNTIL THE SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION FORM IS SUBMITTED. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE REVIEWED.

NRMP for GI Fellowship

I. Timeline for Positions Starting July 1, 2009

Fall 2007 – Winter 2008

Residents apply to fellowship programs.

January 2, 2008

GI Fellowship Match Opens! NRMP on-line enrollment by programs and applicants.

April 9, 2008

Rank Order List (ROL) opens for programs and applicants.

May 21, 2008

Quota Deadline – the final date that programs must certify the number of positions they will offer in each track.

June 4, 2008

Rank Order List (ROL) Certification due to NRMP from programs and applicants.

June 18, 2008

Match Day! Match results for programs and applicants are posted to the NRMP website at 12 noon Eastern time.


II. Tracks or Categories Offered Through the NRMP at Stanford

All our fellows are expected to be trained as clinician-investigators in preparation for future leadership positions in academic gastroenterology, which is a stated mission of the Stanford Gastroenterology program. The second and third years of the fellowship will be designed to ensure that the majority of the trainees' time is devoted to research, either bench or translational in nature, depending upon the candidate's background and interests.

III. Rank Order List

Applicants will submit a single Rank Order List (ROL).
Note: Applicants should only list programs to which they wish to be appointed as fellows as the Match agreement is binding.

IV. The Match Process for Fellowship Applicants

The application process for applicants to be appointed July 1, 2009  is similar to prior years.  We participate in the NRMP and ERAS application (see below for download of forms and information).
Applicants must register with the NRMP on-line to participate in the GI Match and are subject to the above timeline.

VI. Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
